The White Stuff

I love snow.  A LOT.  It reminds me of being a kid when my mom would bundle Brubby (the best big bro ever!) and I up in all of our snow gear and send us into the great white yonder to play with the neighborhood kids.  We would walk the mile or so up to the top of the Knob Creek hill and sled down.  Looking back, I'm not really sure how we made it through those break-neck childhood sledding sessions alive and in one piece.  But we did.

And when we became kid-sized icicles, we would head home for chili and hot chocolate.  It was always best when we would loose power and mom cooked right on top of the old wood stove.  :)

So, today when it is snowy and quiet and nice, I will pile up with some hot chocolate and warm stew and thank my Momma for all of those wonderful memories!

BooksBooksBooks

2009 was a fantastic reading year.  I made a serious effort to read for pleasure more, especially as I was diving back into grad school one again.

Here's my 2009 list, with my favorites highlighted
(though I really enjoyed all of them for totally different reasons):

The Lucky One - Nicholas Sparks
The Christmas Wish - Richard Siddoway
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle - Barbara Kingsolver
The Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follett
The Omnivore's Dilemma - Michael Pollan
The Boleyn Inheritance - Philippa Gregory
My Sister's Keeper - Jodi Picoult
The God of Small Things - Arundhati Roy
Titus Andronicus - Shakespeare
On Call in Hell - Cdr. Richard Jadick
Breaking Dawn - Stephenie Meyer
Eclipse - Stephenie Meyer
New Moon - Stephenie Meyer
Twilight - Stephenie Meyer
Whatever It Takes - Paul Tough
Look Me in the Eye - John Elder Robison
La telarana de Carlota - E.B. White
Persuasion - Jane Austen
Dreams From My Father - Barack Obama
Love and Friendship - Jane Austen

Jane Austen is like crack to me.  Really, probably worse than chocolate chip cookies dunked in cold milk on a chilly, rainy day.  When I love a book, I CAN'T STOP.  Take for instance yesterday.  I'm reading Abundance by Sena Jeter Naslund.  It's a novel about Marie Antoinette.  This is not the most serious or impressive book but it is GOOD and I couldn't put it down.  I had a ton of stuff to do but I read instead.  Oh well.  Historical fiction has always been a huge draw for me and this one is amazing.  And I hear the Naslund's novel Ahab's Wife is even better.

Also, my amazing SIL Mara gave me a list of must-reads and I just got an email that two of them are ready to be picked up at the library.  Dear library, I love you.  Not like.  Not heart.  LOVE.

And on that note, I wasted spent so much time yesterday reading for pleasure, I did not get half of my work-work or school-work or house-hunting-work done.  SO on to that now.  Ciao todos!

Things I Love Thursday

"I hid under the porch because I love you."

I would TOTALLY hide under the porch for these two.

The boys and I watched Up last night and let me tell you, I don't think Disney has ever sent such a tear-jerking cartoon my way!  Seriously, people who know me IRL may know me as a total sap but last night was crazy.  It's probably best for everyone that I didn't count how many times a kid's movie made me cry.

I also love food.  And water.  And particularly after listening to and reading so much about what has happened in Haiti, I'm THANKFUL for these things.

I also am really enjoying this blog: http://freakrevolution.com/blog/  I don't know that I loooove it yet, but I'm really enjoying it and incorporating the concept of moving honesty from 99% to 100% in my life.  It's a work in progress.

I also heart (heart heart heart) some of the changes Blogger made that make posting so much easier.  Not making promises here - as they always seem to fall by the wayside - but hopefully this will help me post more.

Over and out.
